Exam Countdown Timer for Any Exam Date and Reporting Time
A live days, hours, minutes and seconds countdown to your exam, running off your device clock.
Enter a date to start the countdown.
Counts down using your device's clock and local time zone. If the notification states the exam time in IST and your device is set to a different time zone, adjust the time field accordingly.
About this tool
An exam date on a notification is easy to read and easy to ignore. '23 November' feels distant in October and then suddenly it is next week. A countdown that is ticking in front of you turns that date into a number of days you can plan around, and the hours and minutes make the last stretch feel real.
This tool takes an exam name (optional), the exam date and a time, and shows the time remaining as days, hours, minutes and seconds, refreshing every second for as long as the page is open. The time field defaults to 09:00, which suits most morning-shift reporting times, and you can change it to the reporting or gate-closing time printed on your admit card.
It works for anything with a date. SSC CGL Tier 1, NEET, JEE Main, CUET, a university semester exam, a form's last date or an interview all fit, because the countdown is built from the date you type rather than a fixed list of exams.
How to use the exam countdown
- Type the exam name in the optional field so the countdown panel is labelled, for example 'SSC CGL Tier 1'.
- Pick the exam date from the date field, matching the date on your admit card or notification.
- Adjust the time field from the default 09:00 to the reporting time or shift start printed on the admit card, or clear it to count to midnight.
- Watch the panel, which shows the remaining days, hours, minutes and seconds and updates every second.
- Keep the tab open on a second monitor or revisit the page whenever you want the current figure; nothing needs saving.
How the countdown is computed
The tool builds a target moment from the date and time you entered, in your device's local time zone. Every second it reads the current time from the device clock, subtracts it from the target, and converts the difference into whole days, then the leftover hours, then minutes, then seconds. The 'now' is never stored, so the display cannot drift from the real clock even if the tab has been open for hours.
If the target is in the past, the panel switches to a 'was on' message with the exam date and weekday, and the four-box grid is hidden.
- Target: exam date at the given time, or at 00:00 if the time field is cleared
- Difference: target minus now, in milliseconds
- Days: difference divided by 86,400,000 and rounded down
- Hours: the remainder after removing whole days, divided by 3,600,000 and rounded down
- Minutes: the remainder after removing whole hours, divided by 60,000 and rounded down
- Seconds: the remainder after removing whole minutes, divided by 1,000 and rounded down
Worked example
Hypothetical: the exam is on 23/11/2026 with a 09:00 reporting time, and you open the page on 13/10/2026 at 20:30:15 by your device clock. There are 41 calendar days from 13 October to 23 November, but because 09:00 is earlier in the day than 20:30:15, the gap is 40 days plus the part of a day between those two times.
In seconds the difference is 3,500,985, which the tool splits as shown. The panel reads '40d 12h 29m 45s', and a second later it reads 44s.
| Unit | Working | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Days | 3,500,985 divided by 86,400 seconds, rounded down (remainder 44,985) | 40 |
| Hours | 44,985 divided by 3,600, rounded down (remainder 1,785) | 12 |
| Minutes | 1,785 divided by 60, rounded down (remainder 45) | 29 |
| Seconds | the final remainder | 45 |
Reading the countdown
The days figure is the number of full 24-hour periods left, which is one less than the calendar-day count whenever the exam time is earlier in the day than the current time. If you are planning revision by calendar days, count the days box plus one.
The sub-line under the headline shows the weekday and full date of the target. A quick glance there catches the classic slip of typing the wrong month, since the weekday will not match the one on your admit card.
The orange 'was on' state is a sign the date has passed, or that the date was typed wrongly. It is also what you see for a few seconds after the countdown reaches zero.
Time zones and the device clock
Everything is measured against the clock and time zone of the device you are using. Notifications state exam timings in Indian Standard Time, so on a phone or laptop set to IST you can enter the time as printed. If your device is set to another zone, convert the exam time to that zone first and enter the converted figure.
If your device clock is a few minutes off, the countdown will be off by the same amount. Phones that sync time over the network are usually accurate to the second; a desktop with a drifting clock may not be, so check it against a reliable source during the last day.
The page keeps nothing between visits. Closing the tab clears the date, and reopening the page shows the empty form, so you simply type the date again.
Reporting time and exam start time are different. Admit cards usually print a reporting time well before the shift begins and a gate-closing time after which entry is refused. Set the countdown to the gate-closing time if you want the real deadline for being inside the centre.
Frequently asked questions
›Does the countdown count today as a day?
It counts full 24-hour periods between this moment and the exam time, not calendar days. If the exam is at 09:00 and you are looking at the page at 20:30, today's remaining hours and tomorrow's morning are shown in the hours box rather than as a whole day. For planning study days, treat the days box plus one as the number of calendar days you still have.
›What time should I enter if the notification only gives a date?
Leave the default 09:00 or set the usual morning reporting time for that exam if you know it. Clearing the time field makes the tool count down to midnight at the start of the exam date, which overstates the time by several hours. For an application deadline rather than an exam, enter the closing time printed in the notification, commonly 23:59 or 17:00.
›My exam has several shifts. Which time do I enter?
Enter the reporting time printed on your own admit card, or the gate-closing time if you want the hard deadline. Shift timings in SSC, railway and NTA exams differ by candidate, and the admit card is the only document that tells you yours. If the admit card is not out yet, use the earliest shift's reporting time as a safe placeholder and update it later.
›Will the countdown keep running if I close the tab?
No. The page stores nothing, so closing the tab or refreshing it clears the exam name, date and time and returns you to the empty form. While the tab stays open and the device is awake, the figure updates every second. If the device sleeps, the display may pause and then jump forward when it wakes, because the time is read fresh from the clock each second.
›Why is the countdown a few seconds different from another site?
Each countdown reads the clock of the device it runs on, so two devices with clocks set slightly apart show slightly different figures. There can also be a difference in the target time if one site assumes midnight and this one is set to 09:00. Confirm your device clock is synced over the network and check that both countdowns use the same exam time.
›Can I use it for a date that has already passed?
Yes. If the exam date and time are earlier than now, the panel changes to a 'was on' message with the full date and weekday instead of a countdown, and the days, hours, minutes and seconds boxes are hidden. This is handy for confirming the weekday of a past exam, and it is also the state you will see after the countdown runs out.
