Railway Salary Calculator for RRB NTPC, Group D and ALP Posts

Choose an RRB post, the 7th CPC level fills in, and the tool shows gross and in-hand pay for your station.

Grouped by the RRB exam that recruits for it. The pay level is filled in automatically.

Stage 1 is entry pay. 40 stages in Level 6.

Default assumes the last announced rate - override it with the current one.

Levied by some states only. Set to 0 where it does not apply.

About this tool

Railway recruitment notices quote a 7th CPC pay level against every post, and a single RRB exam often fills posts at several levels. NTPC alone runs from Level 2 for Junior Clerk cum Typist to Level 6 for Station Master. This calculator carries 17 posts from the Group D, ALP, Technician, NTPC, JE, SSE and RPF recruitments, picks the level for you and prints the standard monthly slip.

Reach for it when ordering post preferences in an NTPC application, when weighing a Technician Grade III offer against waiting for an ALP result, or when a Group D recruit wants to know how much reaches the bank after NPS. The two running-staff posts, Assistant Loco Pilot and Goods Train Manager, carry a note that running allowance is not in the figure.

The general 7th CPC calculator on resultvital.com explains DA, HRA city classes, transport allowance and CGHS in detail. This page keeps to what is specific to railway posts.

How to use the railway salary calculator

  1. Pick your post from the Railway post dropdown, which is grouped by RRB exam and opens on Station Master.
  2. Set the pay stage to 1 for a new appointment or to the number of increments already drawn.
  3. Choose the city class for the station where you will be posted, not the divisional headquarters.
  4. Update the DA field from the default 58% if a newer rate has been announced.
  5. Tick Higher TPTA city only if the station is on the notified list, and untick CGHS if your slip has a railway medical deduction instead.
  6. Read the estimated monthly in-hand, then open the earnings and deductions panels.

RRB posts and the pay levels behind them

The list runs from Level 1 for Group D to Level 7 for Senior Section Engineer, and the graduate NTPC posts alone split across Level 5 and Level 6. The levels are close together at the bottom of the matrix, so the gaps in basic look small at entry (₹1,900 between Level 1 and Level 2) but widen with every increment, since each stage adds 3% of a larger base.

Worked example for an Assistant Loco Pilot at a Z-class station

Hypothetical: a newly appointed ALP at Level 2, stage 1, posted to a loco shed in a Z-class town not on the higher TPTA list. DA is 58%, NPS and CGHS stay ticked, and professional tax is 0 because the state does not levy it. Basic is ₹19,900 and DA on it is ₹11,542. HRA at the Z-class slab of 10% is ₹1,990. Since basic is below ₹24,200, the Level 1 and 2 transport allowance of ₹900 applies, with ₹522 DA on it.

Move the stage to 8 and basic becomes ₹24,500, which lifts transport allowance to the ₹1,800 slab; the tool then shows gross of ₹44,004 and in-hand of ₹39,883. Running allowance sits outside both figures.

What a railway pay slip has that this tool does not

The calculator produces the same five earning lines and three deduction lines as the general 7th CPC tool. Railway slips add items on top. Running staff draw running allowance on kilometres worked; the tool flags this for ALP and Goods Train Manager but does not estimate it, since the amount depends on duty rosters. Night duty and other department allowances are likewise absent.

On the deduction side, serving railway employees are generally covered by the Railways' own medical arrangements rather than CGHS. The box is ticked by default because the engine is shared; untick it if your slip has no CGHS line.

  • Gross = basic + DA + HRA + transport allowance + DA on transport allowance
  • Transport allowance for Level 1 and 2 posts is ₹900 (₹1,350 higher TPTA) until basic reaches ₹24,200, then ₹1,800 (₹3,600), which Level 3 to 7 posts draw from the start
  • In-hand = gross minus NPS at 10% of basic plus DA, CGHS if ticked, and professional tax

Common mistakes

  • Treating the ALP figure as the full salary. Running allowance is excluded, so the slip understates what running staff draw.
  • Using the city class of the zonal headquarters for a posting at a small station. HRA follows the station, and most wayside stations are Z class.
  • Leaving CGHS ticked when the railway medical scheme applies instead.
  • Comparing Station Master at Level 6 with Goods Train Manager at Level 5 on basic alone, when running allowance is the real difference.

Accuracy and limitations

The level attached to each post follows RRB notifications, and the 17 posts in the dropdown are the common ones, not the full railway cadre. A missing post can be estimated on the general calculator from the level in its notification. Income tax is not deducted, and the DA default is only as current as the tool's last update.

The figure is an estimate of the standard 7th CPC slip for the post's level. Running allowance, night duty and other railway allowances are not included and can change the real amount considerably.

Frequently asked questions

›What is the in-hand salary of an RRB NTPC Station Master?

Station Master is mapped to Level 6, entry basic ₹35,400. For a Y-class posting with DA at 58%, no higher TPTA, NPS and CGHS ticked and ₹200 professional tax, the tool shows gross of ₹65,856 and in-hand of ₹59,613 at stage 1. Untick CGHS if the railway medical scheme applies and in-hand rises by ₹450. Income tax is not deducted.

›How much does a Railway Group D employee take home each month?

Track Maintainer, Helper and Pointsman are at Level 1 with entry basic of ₹18,000. At a Z-class station with DA 58%, no higher TPTA, NPS and CGHS ticked and no professional tax, the tool gives gross of ₹31,662 and in-hand of ₹28,568. The transport allowance line is ₹900 at this basic and rises to ₹1,800 once basic reaches ₹24,200, which happens at stage 11.

›Does the ALP salary shown include running allowance?

No. Running allowance is paid on kilometres actually worked and varies by roster, so there is no stable formula for it. The tool shows the standard slip for Level 2 and prints a note under the result for ALP and Goods Train Manager saying that running allowance is extra. Treat the in-hand figure as the fixed part of a running staff salary.

›Why do different NTPC posts show different salaries?

NTPC fills posts at four pay levels. Junior Clerk, Accounts Clerk and Trains Clerk are Level 2 (₹19,900 entry), Commercial cum Ticket Clerk is Level 3 (₹21,700), Senior Clerk, Goods Train Manager and Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk are Level 5 (₹29,200), and Station Master and Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor are Level 6 (₹35,400). The slip follows the level, so the posts separate from the first month.

›Is Technician Grade III paid the same as Assistant Loco Pilot?

Both are mapped to Level 2 in this tool, so for the same stage, city class and settings the slip is identical, with ₹19,900 entry basic. The difference in practice is that ALP is a running post and draws running allowance on top, while Technician Grade III does not. Technician Grade I Signal, by contrast, is at Level 5 with ₹29,200 entry basic.

›Which city class should I pick for a railway posting?

Use the class of the station where you will physically work, since HRA is paid for the place of duty. Divisional and zonal headquarters are often in X or Y cities, but a large share of railway postings are at wayside stations, loco sheds and yards in Z-class towns, where HRA is 10% of basic at the current DA. Check a colleague's slip for your station if you are unsure.
